Creating your own antibacterial cleaning solution

With all the panic going about the coronavirus, we have faced many questions from some of you on how to keep everything clean and virus-free. It's simple - and all you need are some humble soap flakes! Here are some simple and all-natural recipes you can try out at home. No need to hoard the supermarket for disinfectants!

Multi-purpose cleaning spray

You can use make a big batch of this and store them in travel-sized spray bottles to keep your hands, mobile phones and surrounding surfaces clean!

What you will need:

- 10g <or 2 tablespoons> of Aleppo soap flakes (this contains 20% antibacterial laurel oil)

- 500ml of hot water

- Mixing bowl

Option to add 15-30 drops of antiseptic essential oils such as Tea tree, Lemon or Lemongrass.

Directions:

1. Boil 500ml of water in a kettle or pot.

2. Put the soap flakes into the bowl, and pour the boiled water in - stirring till well dissolved.

3. Add in the essential oils once the solution has cooled down slightly. Your solution is ready! Remember to shake up the bottle before spraying to ensure that you do not get a concentrated mist of essential oils.

All-natural Laundry detergent

Remove odours and bacteria from your clothes with this gentle and fully vegan recipe. Do note that your wash cycle should be placed on a temperature of at least 20 degrees.

Tip: Maintain your machine well with a periodic rinse of white vinegar.

What you will need:

- 20-30g <4-6 tablespoons> of Marseille soap flakes

- 1 litre of water

- 1 large mixing bowl

- 1 large glass bottle (to store detergent)

Option to add 1 tablespoon of baking soda & soda ash for stubborn stains. You may also add 15-30 drops of antiseptic essential oils such as Tea tree, Lemon or Lemongrass.

Directions:

1. Boil 1 litre of water in a kettle or pot.

2. Put the soap flakes into the bowl, and pour the boiled water in - stirring till well dissolved.

3. Add in the baking soda, soda ash and essential oils once the solution has cooled down slightly. Pour into the bottle and your solution is ready! This can be used like your regular laundry liquid and fed directly into the machine. It can also be used for hand washing fabrics.

This can be stored for 6 months.

Do note that the soap flakes contain coconut oil, which will cause the solution to solidify slightly once it has cooled. Give the solution a little shake every time before using and it will be fine! In case you were wondering, the right consistency to look out is slightly gel-like (some say mucus!).
