Retinol Vs Retinoid: How To Choose Which Is Right For Your Skin
@Editoriallist

Firstly, how do you pronounce Bakuchiol? Try this - buh-koo-chee-all. This buzzy plant extract is reported to transform skin by visibly reducing fine lines and pigmentation, and is widely known as a natural alternative to retinols! Read on to find out more about what is it, and why you need to incorporate this ingredient into your beauty routine.

THE SOURCE OF BAKUCHIOL

It is a fully natural active ingredient obtained from Babchi seeds and leaves (Psoralea Corylifolia plant) that grow primarily in India and the Himalayas. Described as the natural alternative to retinol, Bakuchiol possesses striking resemblances with the performances of retinoids but is much gentler on the skin.

Although this has only recently come out as a cult beauty active, the Babchi plant has a long history in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicine for its healing properties, including soothing rashes, calming redness, and even internal medical conditions. (Read more about this here)

WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

In case this sounds like a hippy-dippy thing, there are studies to prove its effectiveness as a potent antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory beauty ingredient. A clinical study published in 2018 by the British Journal of Dermatology has found that the use of Bakuchiol on their patients showed significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation. A quick summary of its benefits

Reduces skin pigmentation: Multiple studies have reported a visible reduction to skin discolorations from environmental exposure.

Refines skin texture and elasticity: The topical use of Bakuchiol reduces the enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, thereby making this a potent ingredient to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and slow down ageing.

Soothes acne-prone skin: It possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties to help calm and heal problematic skin conditions. It can also help to rebuild the skin's natural barrier overtime.

Research has shown that amounts between 0.5-2% are ideal to get visible benefits. Our Bakuchiol Serum has a 1% concentration - good enough to attain results!

BAKUCHIOL VS RETINOLS

The Similiarities:

Retinols have been recommended by dermatologists everywhere as the miracle Vitamin A derivative to reduce fine lines and other signs of aging. It is also used to treat and refine breakout-prone skin by exfoliating the top layers of the skin epidermis - to remove dirt, dead skin cells, and oil from pores. Likewise as mentioned above, clinical studies have also shown that bakuchiol delivers similar benefits in helping to prevent fine lines and the clogging of pores, and improving skin elasticity and texture.

The Differences:

It is not a retinol: Bakuchiol is structurally and chemically different. Unlike retinols, there is a lower chance of dryness, skin irritation and other side effects while using this ingredient.

Stable in sunlight: It isn’t known to make skin more sun-sensitive. Products with Bakuchiol can be used during both day and night with no issues.

Can be used alongside other skin actives: This ingredient isn't known to negatively interact with other skincare ingredients, and therefore can be used alongside other skin actives such as vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and even retinols! (Retinols on the other hand cannot be used with astringents, toners, and other drying agents such as medicated cleansers).

May be safe for use while pregnant or breastfeeding: There are no known studies that reflect any unwanted or negative side effects from using Bakuchiol. However, as this is still a relatively new skincare ingredient, it may be advisable to wait for more evidence to support the safety of use during this period.

WHO CAN USE THIS INGREDIENT

Anyone! The magic of bakuchiol is that it is tolerated by all skin types. If you have previously experienced skin irritation to retinols, this may be a gentler alternative for you.

HOW TO USE IT

The best way right now is to apply it topically as a serum before your regular moisturiser or facial oil. You can use it in the morning and at night for maximum effectiveness. We encourage you to use it consistently over a period of 12 weeks - and you should gradually notice a beautiful freshness and luminosity to your complexion =)
